International badminton success

A huge congratulations to Year 10 students George and Katie who were both selected to represent England Under-17s at the recent Six Nations Badminton Competition in Sweden.

Despite both being a year underage, the duo – who have been playing badminton for 10 years – met the required criteria whilst competing in national Badminton England tournaments. Consequently, they were chosen by the selection panel to join the international squad of 15, who flew out to Uppsala for the five-day event during the Easter holidays.

Competing against some of the best young players from around Europe, the Newbridge pair more than held their own and both played staring roles as England soared to a third-place finish; their best return in 10 years!

They swiftly dispatched the Netherlands 8-1, before suffering back-to-back defeats against Denmark and France. Showing fantastic resilience, they came roaring back and beat Germany and Sweden 6-3 to secure their bronze medal.

Having seamlessly made the transition to the international stage, both George and Katie now have their eyes set on competing at the European Championships next summer.

We can’t wait to see how they get on. Well done both!
