Religious Studies is an important subject for everybody, not just because of its significance in current world affairs, but because it links so strongly into many other fields – music, art, history, politics, social and cultural issues, global economics – the list is endless.

WHAT WILL YOU STUDY?

Religious Studies covers a wide range of issues that affect millions of people around the world, such as war, abortion, euthanasia and relationships. It widens students’ awareness of our surroundings, reflecting our ever-changing world and society. RS also develops skills such as textual analysis, critical thinking, synthesis and evaluation. Our aim is to challenge our students to understand and unravel the concepts they encounter during this diverse course.

The course is divided into three main components:

Component 1: Philosophy and Ethics

  • Issues of Relationships
  • Issues of Life and Death
  • Issues of Good and Evil
  • Issues of Human Rights

Component 2: Christianity

  • Beliefs and Teachings
  • Practices

Component 3: Buddhism

  • Beliefs and Teachings
  • Practices

CAREERS IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES

A GCSE in this subject provides an excellent route to study beyond the age of 16, both for Philosophy, Ethics and Theology A ‘level as well as other post-16 qualifications, especially those that entail critical thinking and essay writing skills. The Russell Group of Universities state that: “Religious Studies … provides suitable preparation for entry to university in general.”

RS links to many careers, in fact, anything that links to working alongside people. From learning about medical ethics, the complexity of different families, to how people live their lives, students will develop more understanding of the world and enhance their employability in many sectors including law, medicine, care and social work, journalism, politics, the civil service, the police force and teaching.

CAREERS IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES

Religious studies students work in a variety of different role in a range of employment sectors. Typical employers include: - national and local government, including the Civil Service and government agencies - schools, colleges and universities (for teaching and research positions); - charities, voluntary and not for profit organisations - social services and other caring professions; - the church and other religious organisations; - financial and legal firms; - the National Health Service; - PR, advertising, sales and marketing companies; - media companies; libraries; charities; museums, television companies and publishing houses and much more.
